The Satanic Slices. Lucifers Pizzeria Makes One Hell of a Pizza. Los Feliz, CA.
What's that burning?
When you step into Lucifers Pizzeria on the funky stretch of Hillhurst (or is it really HELLhurst?) in Los Feliz, there will be no sinister scent of sulfur clouding the air in this tiny "hell-in-the-wall" eatery, tipping off the presence of Beelzebub, Satan, Mephistopheles or, as he's referenced at this pizza joint, Lucifer.
Instead you'll likely be greeted by a bundled blast of freshly baked pizza dough, garlic, lamb, jalapeƱo, pumpkin and any other toppings owner Adam Borich decides will compose a "damned good pizza".
Red, white & green — flavors of the Italian flag.
There was plenty of "damned good pizza" to be had. My favorites include the simple yet fresh and flavorful Margherita pizza with mozzarella, tomato, basil, which is then punched up to a "fiery" level with Lucifers' spicy tomato sauce.
Get me to this Greek!
The Greek Lamb & Rosemary is a pizza fit for a Prince (of Darkness, that is) with loads of lamb, caramelized onions, feta cheese, kalamata olives, rosemary, garlic, lemon pepper and chopped parsley. I needed considerable restraint to stop from overindulging on this pie. The best of these pies from hell as far as I was concerned.
It's not the ring around your finger that'll be burning.
The "Ringburner" was a challenge I could not pass up and a threat to my person that I deliberately ignored. There hasn't been a spicy dish I didn't at least attempt to put in my mouth and the so-called "Ringburner" was going to need more than a scary name to bring me to my knees.
Pepperoni, jalapeƱos, black pepper, bell pepper & hot chili sauce make up the arsenal that is packed on top the "Ringburner". This was a very tasty pie that didn't blow my scalp off — it was a tasty spicy rather than a stupid spicy. Though I barely broke a sweat, the "Ringburner" still packs respectable heat and will probably put a good hurt on the average pizza lover.
Porky pumpkin.
Roast Pumpkin & Prosciutto pizza is the most refined of the bunch. This pie works with a unique and flavorful combination of ingredients that play really well together. Pumpkin, prosciutto, roast garlic, basil and spinach mingle magically and don't overpower one another. This is one combo I personally would've never dreamed up, but I'm very glad that Lucifers did.
Please have a peek at my podcast slide show (in killer HD!) for a more in-depth review of Lucifers, the pizzeria from hell. And nevermind that sulfur stench, it's probably just your really ripe roommate.
